Monday, September 16th

Social Studies 8 - Today we kicked off our first Clarklisto Project. Students have chosen an 8th grade topic and will eventually present that topic to their peers.  If you have chosen an aspect of the Holocaust as your topic I have linked a superb website below.  Simply use the search engine for finding articles on your topic.

Homework - Use a designated (Mrs. Carlisto's blog) source to bring in an article on your topic.  Remember to find an article that helps supplement your text as a source (discussed in class).

APUSH - Students completed a Key Terms quiz on Unit I.  Eight students then presented on colonial figures who dissented and/or help form a foundation for a new nation.  An extra class option is available 10th today.  Unit I test is Wednesday.

Friday, September 13th

Social Studies 8 - Today we continued to review main ideas in the text that may interest students for the first Clarklisto Project.  The first project will start Monday as we will block English and Social Studies.

Homework - Choose a topic for your presentation and bring in a photo that matches that topic.

For example if I choice Lewis & Clark Expedition (obviously not a choice because it is from 7th grade.)  I would bring in the picture below and write "Lewis and Clark Expedition" on it.

This is your first grade in SS8.

10/10 - If you have photo and it is labeled.
5//10 - If you have photo or topic
0/10 - If you do not complete assignment

                                                         Lewis and Clark Expedition

APUSH - Today we discussed the AP multiple choice questions.

Monday will be Key Term quiz and presentations.  We will likely get through 7-10 presentations.

Thursday, September 12th

Social Studies 8 -  Unfortunately our fieldtrip was cancelled today.  It has been rescheduled for Tuesday, September 17th.

In class we started the the selection process of what photo we may like to use for our presentations.  We went through the text to page 559 writing down topics of interest.  We discussed John Brown and discussed the terms - hero and terrorist.

Tonight's homework is to continue to peruse the text and note any topics of interest from pages 559- 582.  Tomorrow we will finish with possible topics and students will need to choos a topic over the weekend.

APUSH - Today we reviewed different aspects of the DBQ and particularly spent time with the 2010 DBQ.

Students should be working through the Hippocampus assignments for this unit.

Our upcoming, tweaked schedule is as follows:

Friday - DBQ conclusion / Unit I discussion
Monday - Key Term Quiz / Presentations start
Tuesday - Finish presentations / review for test
Wednesday - Test Unit I - Hippocampus due

Tuesday, September 10th

Social Studies 8 - Today we continued our look at key events of the 8th grade curriculum.  We specifically brainstormed and recorded some THEMES of HISTORY.

Homework-  Having identified THREE themes that may be enjoyable each student now needs to go into the textbook and find a specific event/person/law/movement etc. that would fit into that theme.  Please note the page that the specific event appeared on.  This assignment can be completed on the piece of paper we were working with in class.

APUSH - Today we discussed loyalty and dissent in American History.  Students will present on an early American dissenter and his/her contribution to the formation of a young nation.

Here in America we are descended in blood and in spirit from revolutionists and rebels -- men and women who dare to dissent from accepted doctrine. As their heirs, may we never confuse honest dissent with disloyal subversion.
-Dwight D Eisenhower

Monday, September 9th

Social Studies 8 - Today we continued our discussion of why we study history and particularly looked at some major events that will be covered throughout this year.  This was a beginning to help set up our first CLARKLISTO project where students choose a photo from our 8th grade study and prepare a presentation.

HOMEWORK - Cover textbook

APUSH - Today we played a little catch-up and modeled the HIPPOCAMPUS aspect of this course (a little too quickly).  Tonight's homework is to complete Friday's assignment on the syllabus.

I have also linked a video I was going to share with students in class but did not have the needed time.  This was a continuation of our discussion of why we study history.

EXTRA CREDIT OPTION - Going against the norm.  I will offer any APUSH student a 20/20 on a minor assignment who watches the President Obama's address to the nation on Tuesday.

Create a chart from his speech outlining TWO aspects of the speech:

Arguments for strikes against the Syrian Regime / Concerns about involving the US in Syria

A simple T-Chart will suffice.

Friday, September 6th

APUSH - Today's class was unfortunately shortened due to an 11th grade class meeting.  After students returned they finished their regents exam.  At the end of class I reviewed the homework as it changed from the syllabus because we did not have the time to set up the original assignment.

THE HOMEWORK:

Review the documents that are part of the 2010 AP Exam DBQ.

Underline/highlight the important parts as you read.  Remember the 1/3 rule when doing so.

Briefly annotate as well.

For each document recored ONE FACT and ONE INFERENCE from the document.  You can record these right on the DBQ.

Social Studies 8- Today we discussed "Why Study History."

Mr Clark's reasons were:

To be a good citizen
To learn from our mistakes, hopefully
To realize “the more things change, the more they stay the same.”
To understand others and be empathetic, tolerant and informed

We then watched a clip from Youtube linked below:

Thursday, September 5th

Welcome Back to School!

SS8- Today students took the pre-test.  I want to emphasize that this test is meaningless in grand scheme of this class.  It is simply a gauge we are required to implement.  Students will likely be familiar with very little of the content.  Students should simply try their hardest and then the real course begins tomorrow.

No homework tonight for SS8.

APUSH- Today students attempted their 44 president bonus chronology.  After that, students completed a practice regents exam to test their knowledge acquired from Kenneth Davis' Don't Know Much About History.

Homework tonight is to preview the 2010 DBQ.  The syllabus for Unit I has been provided and is currently on my teacher page.
